Billy Cobham--Picture This [1987]

Another of my favorites from him..

Most of drummer Billy Cobham's recordings have featured his groups of the period, but this set for GRP matches him with a variety of all-stars. Three songs feature Grover Washington, Jr. on soprano or tenor; Randy Brecker takes a flugelhorn solo on "Taurian Matador"; and other guests include Tom Scott (on his anonymous-sounding lyricon), keyboardist George Duke and bassist Ron Carter. Nothing all that surprising or memorable occurs on the melodic but routine set.

1 Two for Juan -- Cobham, Cobham -- 7:52
2 Same Ole Love -- McLeod, Roberts -- 4:07
3 Taurian Matador -- Cobham -- 4:30
4 You Within Me Within You -- Cobham -- 7:00

Billy Cobham--The Traveler-[1993]

One of my favorites from him.

01. Alfa Waves
02. All That Your Soul Provides
03. Balancing Act
04. What If ?
05. Dippin' The Biscuits In The Soup
06. Fragoline
07. Just One Step Away
08. Mushu Creole Blues
09. On The Inside Track
10. Soul Provider

The Musicians:
DRUMS: Billy Cobham, Gary Hushband (on track 9)
BASS: Ira Coleman, Mike Mondesir (on tracks 2,7 and 10)
KEYBOARDS: Joe Chindamo, Gary Husband (on tracks 1 and 6)
VOCALS: Carole Rowley
GUITARS: Peter Wolpl
PERCUSSION: Billy Cobham, Nippy Noya

These compositions were recorded at Real World Studios Box Mill (Bath, England) November 1993
Produced by Billy Cobham.
All compositions written by Billy Cobham except "What If ?", "Just One Step Away" and "All Your Soul Provides" - Billy Cobham, Carole Rowley.

The overall feel of this recording is very similar to Incoming. Peter Wolpl remains on guitar, as does Nippy Noya on percussion. The pianist has been changed to Joe Chindamo; however, his style is similar to Rita Marcotulli's on Incoming. The music is very dense and cannot be listened to casually or infrequently if one wants to absorb the full impact of the recording. The underrated Wolpl provides an excellent acoustic guitar solo on "Alfa Waves." There are three vocal tracks here, which means a meager attempt at pop on a majority of contemporary jazz recordings. Fortunately, this is not the case here. Carole Rowley does a fine job of "jazz" singing and seems to be a cohesive part of the band, rather than a novelty. Cobham's mastery of rhythm (not technique) is evident on "Balancing Act." This is an aspect of his playing that is often overlooked due to his overwhelming power behind the traps. For fans just interested in that aspect of his playing, "On the Inside Track" features a mini-drum battle with drummer extraordinaire Gary Husband. As a whole, The Traveler is a very good recording and clearly shows Cobham's constant striving to grow as both a composer and musician.

Marcus Miller-Panther Live [1988]

Marcus Miller is a jazz musician, composer and producer, perhaps best known as a bass guitarist with Miles Davis and David Sanborn. Miller is classically trained as a clarinetist, and also plays bass clarinet, keyboards, saxophone, and guitar, and is a capable singer.

This recording was out circa mid 90's. on the german Jazzdoor label. Jazzdoor published very design and extremly good unofficial soundboard recordings of jazz artists using the early 90s european copyright loopholes. They managed very well, moving their distribution from independant to the big companies allowing their cds to be displayed on the highstreet retailer in Europe -IE: FNAC in France -. When Panther - live was displayed on the shelves of the FNAC Paris, Dreyfus records - whom Marcus Miller was in contract with - sent an injunction to all FNAC oulets in order to remove them on the same day. It became a collectible item ever since.

It was also classic for bootleg labels in Germany to change the date and location for their production. Personaly I doubt that this line up ever played together in 1988 in USA.

Marcus Miller - bass guitar, Kenny Garrett - saxophone, Michael "Patches" Steward - trumpet, Bernhard Wright - keyboards, Morris Pleasure - keyboards, Poogie Bell - drums.

Marlene Meets Masato Honda-Live @ B B Station [2007]

Since leaving fusion outfit T-SQUARE almost a decade ago, wind player and bandmaster Masato Honda has embarked on a series of projects with his group B.B. Station. The latest sees him paired with Filipina jazz singer Marlene on this collection of big band and swing. Among a familiar lineup of standards, a chilled, electro-backed intro brings Pee Wee King's "Tennessee Waltz" into the modern age, before it suddenly transforms into a showcase of improvised flourishes that dance among the lyrics. Complex arrangements of pop songs "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" and "I Was Born To Love You," meanwhile, are invigorated by swing instrumentation, the latter even briefly touching on bebop. The tracks missing out on Honda's magical solo touch are the only letdowns, the mournful "Left Alone" — a brave attempt to introduce ambient effects into the mix — spoiled by a murky, echoing piano. It's also a pity that, lacking in reverb, each word of Marlene's husky vocals seem to be snatched away as soon as it is voiced.

Even so, while taking only a few steps outside of a conservative rereading of classics, Honda's masterful performances and the occasional daring arrangement make this an accessible — and fun — album for any fan of big-band music.

Nettai Tropical Jazz Big Band-#2 [September] 1999

FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT MAY NOT KNOW --AKIRA JIMBO ALSO PLAYS WITH THEM.

The Japanese imitate jazz better than anyone, so it is no surprise that they can also assimilate Latin-flavored jazz. On this, their second CD, the 18-21 piece Nettai, led by percussionist Carlos Kanno, parades through two Earth Wind & Fire pop tunes, five originals written by band members, and three standards including "Caravan," "Flamingo" (sung by Kanno) and the "Mission Impossible" theme. What you hear is equivalent to college big band arrangements of the well-known tunes, and short, concise solos that are played straight and have typical, undistinctive flavor and character. A pair of highlights include the serene seascape feeling of "Azul" with the lead instrument being a pianica, sounding like a cross between a harmonica and a melodica. "Mi Terra Natal" is like a quicker Latin version of "A Time for Love." The most outstanding cuts are the last three: a crisp stacatto reading of the ballad "Flamingo," with Kanno singing the lyric in English, "Rendezvous" with a wonderful chart and the best authentic percussion, and "Leyenda" with its fanfare intro and hottest, most spontaneous interaction between the horns and Latin percussion. Kanno is the ex-officio of the famous Orchesta de la Luz, so all the potential is there for Nettai to also emerge as a premier outfit. Perhaps by their next CD they'll dig a little deeper and go toward a more fiery stance.

Omar Hakim--Rhythm Deep-1989

Omar Hakim is a fusion drummer and session man extraordinaire whose talents have graced a tremendous variety of big name recordings in the jazz, pop, and R&B fields dating back to the early '80s. Born in New York City in 1959, Hakim began playing drums at age five, and by age ten was performing with his father, swing trombonist Hasan Hakim (Duke Ellington, Count Basie); he also performed with boyhood friend and future fusion star Marcus Miller. Hakim landed his first big break in 1980 when he joined Carly Simon's backing band; soon after, he became the drummer for Weather Report in time for 1982's Record, and he also landed a gig playing on David Bowie's return to the American pop charts, Let's Dance. He remained with Weather Report until the group's breakup in 1985, and his high-profile engagements helped land him work on Sting's The Dream of the Blue Turtles and Dire Straits' Brothers in Arms, among others.

By this time, Hakim was teaching himself to program drum machines, which put him in even greater demand as a pop, rock, and R&B session musician, and landed him work with Madonna. Meanwhile, he continued his work as a jazz fusion drummer; just a partial list of his credits over the '80s and '90s includes work with Miles Davis, David Sanborn, Roy Ayers, George Benson, Joe Sample, John Scofield, Lee Ritenour, and Najee. In 1989, Hakim released his first solo album, Rhythm Deep, which occupied a middle ground between jazz, R&B, and pop, and gave him a chance to showcase his vocal abilities as well. The results earned Hakim a Grammy nomination.

During the '90s, Hakim continued to improve his skills in the realm of electronic percussion, keeping abreast of new technologies and thereby keeping his session career in good stead. He performed on albums by Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, and Jewel, among other big time pop stars, and initially kept his jazz work going as well, though it had tapered off by the middle of the decade. In 2000, Hakim released his second solo album, The Groovesmith, which took a musical approach similar to his first effort and was produced on his own Macintosh ProTools system.

Requested}-The Rippingtons-Black Diamond [1997]

Still one of my favorite groups..
This was requested by a friend.

The Rippingtons have put together another contemporary jazz fan's "Dream". The Rippingtons really know what jazz fans want and they give it to you holding nothing back. How do they continue to do it? When this question was posed to Russ Freeman, he responds by saying, "I know that there are a lot of you out there who have every CD that we have done. I think about this fact every time I sit down to write another CD. I have tried my hardest to raise the bar just a little more each year, to make better sounding records, and write more exciting songs." The bar has truly been raised. One listen to their latest release and we were once again astonished with the brilliance and energy that The Rippingtons can assemble in their music.

This CD starts out strong with the title track, "Black Diamond" which features the elegant guitar strumming of the one and only, Russ Freeman on his 1960 Strat. This track leads ever so smoothly into the, "Deep Powder" track where you are once again loving every blissful melody backed up with some intriguing vocals from Mark Williamson. The Rippingtons also deliver a lovely ballad on "If I owned the World" with great vocals again by Mark Williamson. "Angelfire" comes at you with a Latin flavor along with remarkable percussion work by Pete Escovedo. This track also features very hot trumpet soloing by one of my favorites, Arturo Sandoval. The CD ends on a high note with a very original acoustical version of the title track that accentuates the vocals and the acoustic instruments. Your going to love it! A must have for your collection.

After nearly a decade at GRP Records, smooth jazz's premier ensemble made a very successful switch to Windham Hill with this recording inspired by leader Russ Freeman's ski adventures in his adopted home of Colorado. Their tenth album continues the band's recent successful ventures into urban-flavored music while also showcasing Freeman's amazing talents for jazz and flamenco guitar playing, in addition to his trademark classical guitar-influenced pop/rock sound. The collection is also a celebration of ten years of the smooth jazz format and the Rippingtons' instrumental role in creating music that helps define the genre's sound. The band weaves through the title track with a soaring, echoing guitar melody over a cool, shuffling hip-hop groove. Mark Williamson's spiritual-flavored chanting enhances the moody textures and funky, retro-soul vibe of the electric guitar-driven "Deep Powder," while the steamy, classical guitar-led "Seven Nights in Rome" finds the band looking down from the mountaintop, thoughtfully recounting the romantic ambience of a recent concert trip to Italy. "North Peak"'s slamming percussion approximates a speedy downhill race, but all that chill is more than balanced by the daring and exotic "Angelfire," which blends Freeman's colorful flamenco stylings and Arturo Sandoval's crackling trumpet.
