Rick Braun has built his career as a contemporary trumpeter based on the basic concepts of predecessors like Herb Alpert, Chuck Mangione, and Tom Browne. Dependent on urban R&B beats, Braun can only marginally be called jazz, but does own an appeal to the smooth music crowd that this produced recording will only reinforce. Teamed with keyboardist and producer Philippe Saisse, Braun follows a path of least resistance in terms of the calculated nature of his music and the simplicity of his melodies. Saisse adds synthesized sounds for the most part alongside Braun's overdubbed flügelhorn and muted trumpet to create soundscapes made of clear plastic and reflecting some prismatic colors. There's not much to distinguish one track from another except slight midtempo changes and some Latin rhythms. "Christiane" uses the two-horn approach effectively in a fairly lyrical setting, "She's the One" is easy-beat funk with plain synths and percussion, "Sleeveless in Seattle" sports a retro sound with handclaps, and "I Got Your Back" offers assimilated horn backing in more substantive ways. On the salsa side, "Tijuana Dance?" is a romp-and-stomp funk with some elegant acoustic and electric guitar, while "Puerto Allegre Jam" is a Latin disco number. "Freddie Was Here" might be appropriate for a film score in a slowed late-night dramatic or perhaps romantic theme. Perhaps the most interesting music crops up during the heavier "Ever Changing World," with Braun's two horns stretching ever so slightly from his lyrically urbane sound. Fond of fluttery notes in introductions, Braun's self-absorbed, passive playing speaks to an urban crowd seeking predictable music, and in this regard he succeeds, remaining in the so-called pocket, not as syrupy as most, but sugary sweet like cotton candy.

2005 release. The second studio project from this popular Japanese funk fusion band featuring the bass player from T-Square, Mitsuro Sutoh, and the drummer from Casiopea, Noriaki Kumagai. This band is clearly one of the best fusion groups in Japan today. Takeshi Hirai, guitar; Hiroshi Kubota, keys; Mitsuru Sutoh, basses; and Noriaki Kumagai, drums.

90s Japanese band surfing on the psych-kraut / free jazz / electro-droning waves. Some very inspired moments and a good sense of interpretation. Snuff Box Immanence, Tune In, Turn On, Free Tibet and Ghost are all accomplished, colorful stoned rock essays.

Cosmos Factory biography The starting line-up of this unique Japanese progrock band is: Tsutomu Izumi (keyboards, Moog synthesizer, vocals), Hisashi Mizutani (guitar, vocals), Toshkazu Taki (bass, vocals), Kazuo Okamoto (drums & percussion) and Misao on violin. They made a serie of albums in the Seventies with every time another sound: the debut album "An Old Castle of Transylvania" ('73) sounds like early FLOYD/VANILLA FUDGE, the third album "Black Hole" (75) is more in the vein of complex KING CRIMSON (nerve-racking FRIPPERIAN play), the second LP "The journey.." sound rather weird and freaky and their fourth entitled "Metal Reflection" is, as the title suggests, pure hardrock/metal.
The long title track of their debut album "An old Castle of Transylvania" (around 20 minutes) is a mindblowing blend of psychedelia and progrock with great build ups and eruptions, very moving! The swirling climate also brings the long live tracks from URIAH HEEP, DEEP PURPLE, IRON BUTTERFLY, VANILLA FUDGE and Krautrock like early JANE and ELOY on my mind. It contains sumptuous keyboardplay (Hammond and Mellotron) and biting guitar. The interplay between guitar and organ is like "Set the controls for the heart of the sun" from PINK FLOYD. The other songs are also loaded with Hammond and Mellotron, a real 'keyboard nirvana'.

While touring between Strikes Twice and its follow-up, Friends, Larry Carlton recorded Eight Times Up live in Tokyo in early 1983. This was his second live album recorded in Japan in under a decade (following 1979's excellent Mr. 335 Live in Japan), and once again found Carlton and band in fine form playing smooth jazz-fusion. Songs from Strikes Twice and Sleepwalk largely comprise this six-song recording. And though the production and instrumentation definitely sound dated, Carlton's guitar playing is once again textbook smooth jazz, and makes up for that slight sonic nuance.

I have been wanting to post this for a while, so here it is....
The history of jazz includes unlikely but successful collaborations as well as examples of people who should have gotten along but didn't. Miles Davis' economy, restraint and understatement were quite a contrast to John Coltrane's lengthy, stream of consciousness solos, and yet, they made great jazz together. Stan Getz and Chet Baker had a lot in common musically and should have collaborated time and time again; however, they couldn't stand one another. And then there are musicians who know they have a lot of musical common ground and act on that knowledge, which is what guitarist Larry Carlton and singer/guitarist Robben Ford do on this live disc (which was recorded in Tokyo, Japan in September 2006). The fact that Carlton and Ford (who knew each other from Tom Scott's L.A. Express back in the mid-'70s) have a lot of common ground does not mean that their guitar playing is identical; Carlton is essentially a jazzman who has been greatly influenced by rock, soul, funk, and blues, while Ford is essentially a bluesman who has been greatly influenced by jazz, rock, soul, and funk. Neither are purists -- Carlton isn't a jazz purist any more than Ford is a blues purist -- and the fact they have eclectic tastes as well as similar tastes makes them logical allies musically. Live in Tokyo cannot be neatly lumped into any one category; jazz, blues, rock, and funk are all part of the musical equation, and Carlton and Ford clearly enjoy a strong rapport on memorable performances such as Carlton's "Burnable" and Ford's "That Road." Ford doesn't do a lot of singing on this 64-minute CD; in fact, "Talk to Your Daughter" is the only vocal offering on a mostly instrumental disc. Live in Tokyo is a rewarding example of what can happen when two musicians who have much in common musically get together. [allmusic]

This is a band from Indonesia, I have never listened to them before this. ROIO send me 3 or 4 total from them. I couldn't find much info on them. but what I did is below. I do know that some of the artists from the old GRP label played with them as well as Bob James and a few others.
" The band was a fusion jazz band and their last album was called Jezz, 1991. In their final effort they blend fusion/ GRP-jazz with ethnic music. Difficult to explain which ethnic music, as they combined several in one song. FYI, there are hundreds of tribes in Indonesia and each have unique ethnic music. They invited GRP musicians such as Lee Ritenour, Bob James, Phil Perry, Ernie Watts to contribute their talent. The members were Aminoto Kosin (keyboard, now a symphony conductor),Erwin Gutawa (bass, now a symphony conductor, also former bandmates of Fariz RM on TRANSS),Candra Darusman (keys and vocal, now active in Music Copyrights organization), Denny TR (guitar, now active as a session guitarist). As for drums they had 3 different drummers: Uce Hariono(now joined Denny TR session band), Aldy (no info) and Budy Haryono (now active in GIGI, also a rock band).

Playing at New York City's music club 'Tonic' ROVO offer a quite undefinable mix of music styles here - this is eclectic, ecstatic, virtuoso. The band is consisting of seven experienced musicians from the japanese experimental rock scene and the songs put on this double compact disc are representing a best-of from two concerts showing them in excellent condition. The two drummer/percussionists Yasuhiro Yoshigaki and Yoichi Okabe are the backbone so to say caring for an enormous groove which is mostly jazzy accentuated but also alternating with a djembe forced tribal fundament.
The opener Sukhna for example holds a hypnotic bass and violin appearance which is intensifying a trancy feeling. And they are also integrating furious impressions, speed changes coupled with fiery escalating moments. I don't know what could be more suspense-packed as the jam Guiding Star - a great example for their instrumental interaction. As for the jazzy moments I'm sometimes remembered at Stomu Yamashta. Horses shouldn't be missed - another great example of combining psych, fusion and trance.
The musicians are really acting like a collective by the way - which means nobody is ever distinctly pushed into the foreground. The songs are mostly lacking of solos - okay - if you don't count some Jean-Luc Ponty references when listening to Vitamine. Second disc now starts with spacey ambient soundscapes supported by a melancholic violin until the band grooves once more. Cisko is presented in a clear psych/space environment with distorted wah-wah modulated guitars and twittering synths (which you will find all over by the way) evolving to an ecstatic heavy rocking piece in the vein of Hawkwind.
Now I won't forget to mention the lengthy Sinno, originally composed by guitarist Seiichi Yamamoto for a split CD with Date Course Pentagon Royal Garden. Nearly 35 minutes long, showing a long electronical intro, then slipping into something like a trip hop/nu jazz behaviour and later gliding into the orbit with a spacey flow ... open-end! This eclectic suite is really something special. A tough call ... have to listen once more.[Rivertree]PROGARCH.
