Pageant--Abysmal Masquerade [1987]

This is one of the beauties of the Japanese progressive rock. PAGEANT was formed in '81 by guitarplayer Ikkou Nakajima, singer/keyboard player Hiroko Nagai, bass player Nagashima and drummer Hideaki Indou. In '85 they appeared on a Japanese progrock compilation entilted "Progressive Battle" and one year later PAGEANT released their debut-album "La Mosaïque de la Rêverie", a 'classic'. The band was completed by Kazuhiro Miyatake (flute and electric guitar) and Nobuyuki Nagashima (bass) on those records. The second album "Abysmal Masquerade" appeared in '87 and two years followed by the third record entitled "The Pay for a Dreamer's Sin". On this album Hiroko Nagai and Hideaki Indou remained from the original line-up, Kazuhiro Miyatake played flute on two tracks and the band's new guitarplayer became Hiroyuki Maeno.

The first album "La Mosaïque de la Rêverie" is one of the most acclaimed Japanese albums: beautiful 24-carat symphonic rock, very melodic and harmonic with strong hints from GENESIS, CAMEL and RENAISSANCE. The compositions contain twanging guitars, delicate flute, lush keyboards and sensitive electric guitar. The Japanese vocals sound very convincing: powerful and high pitched. The climates changes from dreamy to bombastic with splendid build-ups and exciting 'grand finales'. The second album "Abysmal Masquerade" is in the vein of the first but sound less elaborate and less compelling. It contains two new versions and one live version from the first album. The third album "The Pay for a dreamer' Sin" is more progressive pop like CLANNAD and Kate BUSH than symphonic rock but sounds tasteful with strong, harder-edged guitarplay.

Billy Cobham--Total Eclipse [1974]

Those of you that know me, know I like BC, Here is one of the early ones..

This is Billy Cobham's third solo recording under his own name and is a fine follow-up to Crosswinds. The mini-suite "Solarization" not only showcases the band's technical abilities, but also Cobham's strong compositional skills. It also features a schizophrenic piano solo ("Second Phase") from the underrated pianist Milcho Leviev, who sounds like a mutation of Cecil Taylor and Bill Evans. The funky "Moon Germs," on which John Abercrombie is pushed to inspiring new heights, became a Cobham classic. "The Moon Ain't Made of Green Cheese" is a beautiful flugelhorn solo by Randy Brecker backed by Cobham's debut on piano. The band stretches out on the lengthy "Sea of Tranquility," while "Last Frontier" is a gratuitous drum solo. This recording is highly recommended as Cobham still sounds inspired.

1 Solarization: Solarization/Second Phase/Crescent Sun/Voyage/Solari ... Cobham 11:09
2 Lunarputians Cobham 2:33
3 Total Eclipse Cobham 5:58
4 Bandits Cobham 2:32
5 Moon Germs Cobham 4:57-----[in player]
6 The Moon Ain't Made of Green Cheese Cobham :58
7 Sea of Tranquility Cobham 10:43
8 Last Frontier Cobham 5:21

Ars Nova--Force For The Fourth [2005]

Here's another nice j-prog from Dave. Thanks again.

This last Ars Nova album to date, is actually a compilation. But what is interesting is that it is not just a compilation.

All the numbers have been revisited and some sound rather different than their original counterparts. The opening number "Succubus" is as wild as on "Android Domina": lush and bombastic keyboards, but some furious guitar has been added (same applies to "Horla Rising" from "Android Domina" as well). "Horla" features grandiose and melodic synthesizer and it is worth an attentive spin.

During most of their career, the band was limited to a trio (bass, drums and keys), but there was already a change with their previous record "Biogenesis" which featured Arjen Lucassen as a guest; and I have to say that the addition of this instrument is not a bad thing.

There are two songs from their second opus : "Transi" and "Nova". The latter is another highlight of this work. A keyboards firework fully dynamic but melodic as well. A great digest of their work.

The least interesting of this whole compilation effort is "The 42 Gods" from "The Book of Dead". Too much performance oriented IMHHO.

I am also disappointed by the rendition of "Metamorphosis". I far much preferred the original released on "Biogenesis". This is indeed a "Metamorphose" like it is newly called here. The guitar is not well received here. It converts this track too much in a Crimson mood. Too bad because the original work was one of my fave from this band.

This is a pleasant manner to access the band. It allows you to discover their ELP-ish universe and it's up to you to decide if you want to investigate more of their work (of which my preferred album is "Android Domina").

The band announces a new album for the summer of 2008. They are currently recording it and a full time guitar player is now part of the band (Satoshi, the one featured here as well). Hopefully, it will be in the vein of "Android".

Songs / Tracks Listing

1. Succubus (5:40)
2. Transi (8:34)
3. Horla Rising (9:31)
4. The Forty-Two Gods (5:28)
5. Metamorphose (6:09)
6. Nova (10:42)

Total Time: 46:04
Line-up / Musicians

- Keiko Kumagai / keyboards
- Shinko Shibata / bass
- Masahiro Goto / drums
- Satoshi Handa / electric guitar (1, 3 & 5)

Here is info from scrap..

There are 2 Japanese bands called "camino."

The one you posted on your blog is surely the older one, led by the guitarist Kenji OHMURA (died Nov 18, 1998 because of hepatitis), and the band was active from 1975 to 1977.

They released only 2 albums although they are re-banded once again in 1992, no official tapes are recorded. (only live performances were done)

The belows are their only 2 albums released under the indies label here in Japan.  Both are no longer available, cannot be seen on the market anymore.

Camino - Live [1976] (EDG3)
Label: BRIDGE INC.
Released: 2004/11/18

Remastered CD using tapes recorded in their live performances, but this is their 1st album.

[track list]
1. Further on up the road
2. Introducing Camino (original)
3. Key to the highway
4. Everyday I have the blues
5. I call your name
6. Laughing dog (original)
7. Tropicana blues (original)
8. Stormy Monday
9. Season of the witch
10.The sky is crying

Camino - Deep In Side Of CAMINO (EDG6)
Label: BRIDGE INC.
Released: 2005/2/25

This album was released in 2005, but the all titles in this CD are from their old tapes, again, the ones recorded in their live performances.

[track list]
1. Medley
Have you ever loved a woman
Little Queenie
Further on up the road
2. Shinkuh (original)
3. Bamboo Bong/Original Full Version (original)
4. Sweet Little Angel
5. Sidewinder (original)

The label, BRIDGE INC. seems doing management business also for artists, their online store/official web is:

http://bridge-inc.net/
http://bridge-inc.net/engdex.html  (English page, company info only)

Amazon JP don't carry any of above camino CD albums.

It must be the 2nd/last album above, if the titles in your article were correct. (track 2 and 3 in the 2nd album)

Hope this helps :)
