Salle Gaveau--Alloy [2007]

Here's some "RIO/AVANT-PROG."

Salle Gaveau spawned from the Japanese Avant-prog band Bondage Fruit, birthed by guitarist Natsuki Kido. Their archetype Tango sound was highly influenced form masters Astor Piazzolla, with all performers versed in Argentinean Tango. The band made their first appearance as a group in 2003, consisting of Natsuki Kido (guitar), Naoki Kita (violin), Yoshiaki Sato (accordéon) and Keisuke Torigoe (contrabass). In October 2005, Masaki Hayashi (piano) joined the band, rendering the line-up complete.

Salle Gaveau have only released one album Alloy (2007), which can be described as Chamber Tango, facilitated with the likes of: Classical, jazz, rock, progressive rock. Through passages of electric musical dexterity these five top class performers craft energetic Chamber prog of the highest calibre. The band has a left field sound when paralleled to traditional Japanese Avant-prog; a subtle French class taints their sound, thanks to the accordéon. Between the fast pace flourishes they coax their audience with more digestible delicacies, procuring a perfectly balanced album.

Unfazed by playing next to the likes of Magma and Present, the band gained international success, with their astounding performance at the 2007 Rock In Opposition festival. Salle Gaveau should reach out to vast audience among progressive rock not just confining themselves to the absurd and weird. Highly Recommended.

[EXCLUSIVE](REPOST) 3 X 3 with Koichi Yabori-2857 [2005]

he latest release by 3x3 is a wide-open, full-blast jolt of intense jazz. It's hard to avoid the ambiguous term "fusion" but this is serious music beyond categories. The eight songs move through well-conceived sections that gradually spin outward into deeper and more complex spaces that always burst open into great musical expressions. This moving from thoughtful control to pyrotechnical release is compelling.

On the opening tune, "Won't You Join Us?" the thick electric bass lines of Mizuno churns beneath first Yabori's solo, then Daitoku's. The quartet is tight, focused and driving. There's no extras here, no ego, no showing off, just solid, open energy. "Court" dips into more swinging rhythms, with a stretched-out walking bass and back and forth lead line. The solos here break themselves up into interesting patterns on their own, naturally and fluently.

Even though jamming fast and furious is their forte, the group rests with cool patches that let the listener catch their musical breath. The harmonies the groups have mastered are shown best on these slower unhurried numbers. "Amapola" sets a slower, Latin-ish rhythm as does the elegant "Anytime I Feel." These slower-tempo numbers show the trio's great sensitivity and harmonic sense. They move through pretty chord changes and solo with care and delicacy.

Still, though, it's the fast numbers that linger in your mind. "Dash Down" heads upward as much as downward, with Yabori's electric sound taking center stage with unrestrained guitar jamming. The trio really flies here, pushing and pulling against each other with great strength and inventiveness. "That's That" has a funky, almost gospel-blues feel, that quickly drops into rhythmic finesse. That doesn't mean, though, they avoid modern chords and "out" patches. All four know right how to rough the melody up, for interest, and then let it slip back into resolving patterns, for comfort. "6 x 3" goes furthest "out" with an interesting wildness made of intriguing modes and throbbing bass—an engaging combination of sounds.

This CD from 3 x 3 is full-on, tightly focused music. Nothing goes astray here, even when painting outside the lines. At whatever speed, whatever harmonies, whatever melodic direction, the band stays right on target.

Tracks::

1. Won't You Join Us?-6:07
2. Court-6:15
3. Dash Down-8:05
4. Amapola-5:23
5. That's That-5:07
6. Anytime I Fell-5:37
7. Stray Arrow-5:39

Misc songs

The following was donated by Nicholas::: thanks I decided to share 2 songs with you. The songs are titled 'Timepiece phase II' and 'Concertino in Blue', released in 2007's Guitarfreaks V3 & Drummania V3 OST.

But first, a short history on the songs. In 2006, the Japanese music game company, Bemani polled fans on their favorite song from the Guitarfreaks and Drummania range of games. (I'm not sure if you'd seen these 2 games in the arcade, but in essence they are to the Japanese what Guitar Hero and Rock Band are to the Americans.)

So, 2 songs were chosen from the poll results to be remixed, and the resulting songs had strong Jazz Fusion influences. Akira Jimbo, Hiroyuki Noritake and Dimension took part in the recording and arrangement:

Timepiece phase II by Jimmy Weckl (born Harumi Ueko, no relation to Dave Weckl)
Written: 佐々木博史 / Sasaki Hirofumi (Bemani musician, has since left. Fan favorite)
Arranged: Jimmy Weckl

Bass: 肥塚良彦 / Koezuka Yoshihiro (Bemani musician)
Drums: 則竹裕之 / Noritake Hiroyuki

[REQUESTED] MONO--Hey,You [ep] 2000

Mono are a Japanese instrumental rock band, formed in 1999 in Tokyo, Kanto, Honshu. The band consists of Takaakira Goto (electric guitar), Yoda (electric guitar), Tamaki Kunishi (bass guitar, electric guitar, piano, glockenspiel), and Yasunori Takada (drum kit, glockenspiel, synthesizer).

Mono have released five studio albums during their years of activity. The band spent their early years, from 1999 to 2003, touring Asia, Europe, and America continuously, and released two studio albums, Under the Pipal Tree (2001) and One Step More and You Die (2002) on the Tzadik and Music Mine Inc. record labels, respectively. From 2004 to 2007, Mono signed to Temporary Residence Limited, released two more studio albums, Walking Cloud and Deep Red Sky, Flag Fluttered and the Sun Shined (2004) and You Are There (2006), and toured worldwide in their support. In 2008, the band took a break, and later returned the following year with a new studio album, Hymn to the Immortal Wind (2009), also on Temporary Residence Limited.

The band's style of instrumental rock music is influenced by the genres of experimental rock and shoegazing, as well as by both the classical and contemporary classical periods of classical music, and also by noise and minimalism. Mono's sound is characterised by the lead and rhythm guitars of Goto and Yoda respectively, both of whom make extensive use of reverb, distortion and delay effects. The band's live performances are noted for their intensity, both in the playing and in the dynamics.

Natsumen-Never Wear Out Your Summer-LIVE[2006]

The instrumental Japanese band Natsumen was formed by two members coming out from the disbanded BOaT, guitarists AxSxE and Ain. They put up together an eight piece band that in addition to them being the two guitarists has two saxophonists, trumpet player, keyboards player, bassist and a drummer. The extended lineup is also one reason for the richness and fullness of their sound. In their 2006 live release, Never Wear Out Your Summer XXX!!!, they deliver a powerful, high energy non-stop roller coaster jazz-rock show. At times somewhat comparable to Jaga Jazzist, they create fast and dynamic music, ongoing and relentless. With two releases to their credit (one live and one studio release), there is much to look forward to. You'll notice a Summer motif with their name, record names and track titles. And indeed their music has a fun, optimistic and overall "sunny" attitude that fits this recurrent Summer ideal.
