[SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT] INDIGO JAM UNIT

I received this today and agreed to post it. Let's all try and help out this fine band. They are not only trying to sell albums, but have not asked me to take down their postings. So please read and help if you can. Thanks.. JJ

Hi there,

Mikael at basis records in Japan here. I'm really glad you like our artist indigo jam unit's work, and
first i just want to say that I'm not gonna preach about copyrights etc etc unless you twist my arm.;)
I would like to ask you for a favor, though.

We put up indigo's all six albums on iTunes in May, so now there's at least one way to download their music
but we still need to get the word out.

I'd really appreciate a shout out on your blog, twitter or anything like that.

I hope you don't mind me posting some links that can be used if you'd like.

We have a new English website that can be found here:

http://www.basisrecords.com/indigo/index-e.html

The direct link to indigo on iTunes is:
http://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/indigo-jam-unit/id435545562?uo=4

We have, has set up a sponsored link, too, and the commissions from sales on that link
will help the band even more:

Here's that link:

Anyway, let me know what you think. Being a 100% independent jazz label, we definitely can use all the help we can find.

Special Others--PB [2009]

Yep, another nice release from them. If they have grown on you as they have me, you should enjoy this as well. Thanks to "xyzz" for these.

Mainstream post-rock was meant to be an onward-looking style, but Special Others are here to remind the world that this music actually shares a common ideology with jazz and, to a lesser extent, surf and early psychedelia. All of these styles are trying to break out from the verse-chorus scheme and explore some less hackneyed melodies and song structures, usually in an instrumental form, so as not to be distracted from the music by words; Special Others manage to pull off this trick while combining the best of both worlds -- they stick to the old tricks, but use them to create a new sound that's retro and fresh at the same time. The first minutes of PB may indeed sound like a Keith Jarrett exercise or a trip to the '40s: the band uses the typical jazzy percussion -- they don't stray from 4/4, but keep they things busy -- the bass is wandering all over the place, and the airy clean guitars and vintage synths intertwine in a nostalgic way. However, the coffee house jazz vibe recedes by the time Special Others are through with the first of their many melodic adventures: the group is too focused for a jam band, and no matter how complex the playing is (never too complex, actually), the goal is melody, not exploration of the higher realms of jazz math. This makes PB a positive, dynamic, and catchy record, closer to Stereolab and Mercury Program than Explosions in the Sky -- if the latter mimics the ocean with ebbs and flows and the occasional tsunami, Special Others are more like a river: not much change in speed, but a lot of interesting places to be hit along the way. Sprawling but not meandering, PB does sometimes sound retro, but never obsolete, and has its own face that's really more worth checking out than the millionth Mogwai wannabe.

Yosuke Yamashita N.Y. Trio--Kurdish Dance 1992 [nmr]

Thanks to the original uploader for this. Nice work from him and the group again. Appreciated..Pianist and composer Yosuke Yamashita has made several smart moves on this disc, starting with his choice of bassist Cecil McBee and drummer Pheeroan Aklaff as sparring partners. Augmenting this champion rhythm section with Joe Lovano's tenor was another inspiration. When the quartet leans into the minor-keyed title cut or when Lovano works his chocked upper register over McBee's bowed bass in "Tiny Square," there's no question that the leader's choices are paying off. Yamashita the composer in a highly promising (and highly pleasurable) direction.-James Marcus, Jazz Times,[ All Music Guide.]

Le Silo--8.8[2004] & 3.27830 [2006]

Here are the only 2 known releases from this band. I never heard of them til I was sent these. It is a side project for the guys. IMO disc 2 is better than 1 but both are good. Thanks to "xyzz" for something I never heard of, appreciated.

Le Silo, are a 3-piece band from Japan, that play a widely influenced blend of demanding prog rock, which mostly takes the form of RIO and avant-jazz, with punk-rock stylistics, which is not only captivating, but well played. By no means is their sound entirely original, but the musicianship is of a high quality and they do indeed have some very excellent and surprising moments too. Their punk stylistics are evident and with Miyako's links to Yoshida Tatsuya, then it is obvious they are influenced by Ruins and Koenjihyakkei and most likely Boredoms and Happy Family as well. Non-Japanese bands they are likely influenced by, include Univers Zéro, Present, French TV, Samla Mammas Manna and Miriodor. Originally starting life as Miyako (presumably named after Miyako Kanazawa), a punk orientated band; they eventually changed their style and their name to Le Silo, (some of their tracks have French titles too), presumably in honour of the French and Belgian bands that most likely influenced them. The members of the band - Yoshiharu Izutsu (guitar and voice); Michiaki Suganuma (drums and voice) and Miyako Kanizawa (piano) - released their debut album "8.8" in 2004 on the Tutinoko label in Japan. Miyako is also a member of Koenjihyakkei (keyboards and voice) alongside Ruins and Daimonji drummer Tatsuya Yoshida, who also produced "8.8".

If you enjoy the Japanese avant-prog scene and bands such as Ruins and Koenjihyakkei, you'll enjoy Le Silo. If you enjoy bands such as Univers Zéro, Present, Sammla Mannas Manna, Guapo, Ahvak and Absolute Zero, you'll also likely enjoy Le Silo. Also liking zeuhl will help you with your chances of liking them also.

1st Release--8.8
01. Le Soleil (3.54)
02. Enormous Trees With the Holy Spirits #1 (2:23)

ADDED NEW BLOG

I have added a new blog to the blog list. It's Zach's, and as a follower of this and a few others, check him out. He has posted a rare TOSHIYUKI HONDA rlease,, reLax.

Welcome and good luck Zach...JJ

Santana--Caravanseri--[1972]

LINK WORKS FINE
This is the 1st of 2 by him which I will post. This was a big change for Carlos. You can read about it below. Great jazz/fusion/rock/.

Caravanserai is the fourth studio album by Santana released in October 1972. It marked a major turning point in Carlos Santana's career as it was a sharp departure from his critically acclaimed first three albums. Original bassist David Brown left the group in 1971 and was replaced by Doug Rauch and Tom Rutley, while original percussionist Michael Carabello left and was replaced by Armando Peraza. Keyboardist/vocalist Gregg Rolie, who was having a falling-out with Santana, was replaced by Tom Coster on a few songs. Caravanserai reached the top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart in 1972.

The sound contrasted greatly with Santana's trademark fusion of salsa, rock, and jazz, and concentrated mostly on jazz-like instrumental passages. All but three songs were instrumentals, and consequently the album yielded no hit singles. The album is the first among a series of Santana albums that were known for their increasing musical complexity, marking a move away from the popular rock format of the early Santana albums towards a more contemplative and experimental jazz sound. While Caravanserai is regarded as an artistic success, the musical changes that began on its release in 1972 marked the start of a slide in Santana's commercial popularity.

It was the last Santana album to feature Gregg Rolie and Neal Schon, who went on to form Journey the following year.

In 1998 SME records in Japan, part of Sony Music, also released the remastered version as an SACD. This disc is stereo only, and furthermore, it is a single layer SACD, which means that ordinary CD players will not play it.
