Over the years Shun has performed with such blues, soul and jazz legends as Buddy Guy, Otis Rush, Johnny and Shemekia Copeland, Bo Didley, Robert Lockwood Jr, Hubert Sumlin, Tyrone Davis, Willie Clayton, Brian McKnight, Dave Myers, Irma Thomas, Denise LaSalle, Marva Wright, Roy Hargrove, Mark Turner, Mark Whitfeild, Kenny Wayne Shepperd, Mojo Buford, Lonnie Brooks, Eddy Clearwater, Marcia Ball, Kenny Neal, Billy Branch and Susan Tedeschi. In 1986, at the age 19, Shun moved to Boston and enrolled at the Berklee College of Music, one of the most renowned known jazz-popular music schools in the United States. While at Berklee, Shun studied jazz composition, arrangements, and harmonic theory. An epiphany came when a friend introduced Shun to B.B.King's "Live at the Regal"; one of the greatest blues recordings ever, this was destiny calling is name. Shun states, " The album hit me, man. It was so great. I just loved it. A whole lot of energy, emotions, feelings, just great," Shun described the impact of his first exposure to blues. " From that point on, I was into blues really seriously," continued Shun. At Berklee, Shun jammed with Roy Hargrove (trumpet), Mark Turner (tenor sax), and Mark Whitfield (guitar). Perhaps it was also fate that George Benson; one of world's greatest jazz guitarists whom Shun credits as also having a tremendous influence on him, was guest of honor at Berklee's graduation ceremony and presented Shun with his diploma, yet another epiphany for Shun.

Here's the 3rd release from this very good symp prog band.[I have the 1st posted]
FROMAGE story starts back in the late 70's when two future famous Japanese musicians join in Kyoto to for a band, we are talking about Toshio Egawa (Novela, Gerard, Scheherezade) and Ikkou Nakajima (Pageant, Ie Rai Shan) but they left long before FROMAGE released their debut album 1984.
Leaded by the flute player Manabu Higashizawa the lineup included Tomohisa Hayashi (Bass), the solid guitar player Yoshihito Kondo, Yoshi Shimamura on keyboards and the drummer Hirozaku Taniguchi, FROMAGE releases "Ondine" an excellent vocal Symphonic album in the borderline with the early Neo Prog movement in England.
For their second album "Ophelia" released in 1988, the band had several changes, Yoshihiro Kitamura (Keyboards) Tohru Ohta (Guitars) and Yuji Tanaka (Bass) join the band instead of Shimamura, Komdo and Hayashi, making a strong change, "Ophelia" has stronger melodies and the keyboard orientation is 100% Symphonic, IMO a much solid album.
Their last release is "Tsukini-Hoeru" which has material from both eras, this would explain why it is credited as released in 1990 but on some sites appear as recorded in 1985.
FROMAGE still survived until 1993 but apparently due to artistic differences they split but the spirit of the band was kept alive because Tohru Ohta, Hirozaku Taniguchi and Yoshihiro Kitamura moved on and formed CINEMA.
Just to end, must only say that FROMAGE is among the best Japanese Symphonic bands and a good point to start a collection would be "Ophelia" when they reached their peak of the creativity and developed an absolutely Symphonic personality.

Djamra, formed in Osaka, Japan, by the key player and a bassist Masaharu Nakakita, gave the first shout in 1994. They could grow up every year playing around lots of shows and see the moonshine with the eponymous debut mini-album in 2000. Their musical style is exactly complex mixture of rock, jazz, avantgarde and Naniwan beat. Shinji Kitamura (saxophone) plays on DJAMRA from their early days and Akihiro Enomoto (drums and percussions) joined the outfit in 2001. Polishing their brilliant skill and originality could led them to the debut on POSEIDON/MUSEA Records and the release of the second album "Transplantation" in 2003. For releasing "Kamihitoe" (2006), their third work, they auditioned two talented musicians; Akira Ishikawa (guitars) and Takehiro Fukuda (keyboards). They now can get more powerful, more worldwide, and more foolish! (Anyway, in Osaka, "AHO" (fool in English) is a respectful word.)

Sprawling double Live/Studio LP . The live renditions having the slight edge over the studio set. 'All the Days' and 'Hiroshima' are darkly psychedelic. The title track is a Hammond driven thing. 'Satori 'pt ll soars. 'Shadows of lost Days' and 'Blue Suede Shoes' are a throw back to a time when FTB played back up to Yuya Uchida, who appears here on 'Blue Suede Shoes'. 'Look out My Window' is the pick of the studio tunes. .... Formed in 1967, this japanse proggy-doom heavy rockin' band started their career with 60's West coast acid rock covers under the name Yuya Uchida & The Flowers ("Challenge", 1969). With "Anywhere" (1970 they were in search of their own sound and musical identity, surfing on 70's California rock and on the stoned heavy rock of the Sabbath. Satori (1971) remains their ultimate masterpiece, delivering a really captivating, personal psych-hard rockin' trip with discreet Eastern mystical influences. After this mesmerising stoner rock essay the band released a last album "Make up" (1973). Flower Travellin' Band is definitely a 70's cult psychedelic / space rock standard and a strong reference on the Japaneses underground scene with other psych-proto-metallers as Brush!? and Les Rallizes Denudes.

thanks to "a fan of the site" for this and others from them. appreciated. Recently, the knowledge and the technology might accompany very reformative directionality in the field of Prog Rock of Japan. Those elements were distributed and it rushed into for the flow that absorbed various music by Prog Rock of Japan of the 70's and made the dawn at the delivered time in the 80's. Prog Rock that Japan thinks about and standard music are caught as very various genres and unite with the unique culture of Japan. In the music delivered by Japan, it might be also true with an original part as one genre. A lot of music to associate the sound of an overseas band exactly in the flow of Prog Rock and Jazz Rock that Japan thinks about exists. Of course, the music of other countries also produces wonderful music attended with each culture and the custom.
This "Sixnorth" will be able to feel the influence of Canterbury Scene enough in the item of Prog Rock and Jazz Rock. It is guessed that the member etc. of the band were brought close in a perfect direction to execute various ideas that they also absorbed for a long time actually concretely.
Bass player's Hideyuki Shima was formed to them as a person at the center in 1998. They are developing the activity of music in the city that is called Kyoto that exists chiefly in Japan. It discovers in putting out of their performances the color of Canterbury as the style of music remarkably and the listener will be able to discover it. Japan ..Jazz Rock original ..the idea.... has finished while doing the performance that is chiefly reminiscent of Canterbury Scene to the subject in this announced album in 2003.
"Magnetic Factor" starts by the chorus that Chizuko Ura is beautiful. The impression from which making a hard sound has come to the front is given. Composing the tune however ..indeed ..reminiscent of Hatfield And The North and National Health.. high quality Jazz Rock.. has finished. Complex development might mix a lot of elements that Canterbury is good.
"The Fourth Way" has the flow of hard Fusion. The melody that the guitar player makes associates Allan Holdsworth. Therefore, the tune might be near the sound of Bruford in the 70's. And, the part of hardness progresses consistently. The tune shifts to a chaotic part on the top. The tune develops indeed original Jazz Rock.
The song of Chizuko Ura sounds beautifully again in "Everything Becomes Circle". Akihisa Thuboy of "KBB" performs Violin of the unison in close relation to the song. The song and Violin pull a beautiful melody. Solo of Sax also exactly contributes to the tune. Chizuko Ura might be a singer who can correspond to not only Rock but also the tune of various genres.
As for "The Enneagram", a complex theme of the keyboard is impressive. And, the chorus who is reminiscent of The Northettes twines well. The flow with elegant feeling might be their good arrangements. And, the flow of the keyboard will imagine the flow of "U.K.". The arrangement of Sax is also splendid. And, the development that returns from Solo of the drum to the theme will give the listener the excitement.
It is ..high-quality Jazz Rock.. finished in .."From Sri Lanka To Titan".. flow of this album. Ensemble of the band might be indeed splendid. Complex development that is reminiscent of National Health as the flow of the anacatesthesia is made to exist together waits for the world and the aspect and advances about them originally. The technology of the performance might be high. The chorus part settles the tune well at the end.
The chorus who is gentle in "The Age of Horus" sounds. The melody of soprano Sax and the impression of the tune might be flows near standard Fusion. Their original ideas might succeed in twining of an elegant flow and a complex melody. It advances well without destroying the flow of the album.
The development that continues from "Introduction to Richard" to "Richard" might be one of the highlights of this album. Desire to Richard Sinclair by which they show deference. And, the mind that always loves music of Canterbury. And, the fact to make David Sinclair participate as a keyboard. The tune shows deference as their ideas while quoting "Fitter Stoke Has A Bath" of Hatfield And The North. As for lyrics of the song, the desire to Richard Sinclair is exactly sung enough. 「Let's shut eyes and talk. You and I are eternal friends. 」 This lyrics are indeed moving lyrics. The desire will reach Richard Sinclair.
They exactly absorbed and executed a good part in Canterbury in the field of Prog Rock of Japan. The technology and the knowledge of the performance might function enough. [THIS REVIEW FROM 'KAZUHIRO' PROGARCHIVES.

These will be up for 48 hrs. only then removed. Thanks to the following for the original files, tjap, fusionfreak, jjazzfusion. This is yet another fine Japanese fusion band. Japan seems to have two predominant styles of fusion that come from there, either the melodic smooth jazz styles of bands like: T-Square, Casiopea, Dimension, & Native Son, or the more technical, hard fusion bands, like: Fragile, Keep, Prism, Kazumi Watanabe, & Kenso. This would fall into the second categorically, and like many of those bands it's easy music to like. A high level of musicianship abounds, and the songs have that "friendly" feel to them, something that is present with most Japanese fusion bands in general. If you like bands like the second group mentioned above, or more notable bands like;Tribal Tech, The Code, Network, Elektric Band, this is in that style and should appeal to you.
