Here's some great big band music. Smooth also has a couple more posted @ My Jazz World. I have posted Track #3-in the player in sidebar.
Big band pyrotechnics by the 20-piece Tokyo Union. This is no sleepy Scandinavian voyage, more a groovy collection of orchestra and electronics in the shape of six varied stormers written by legendary Japanese bandsman Bingo Miki and perhaps a little more accessable and funky then some of the big band outings released under his own name around the same period.
Familiar orchestral colours are melded with more progressive and funky arrangements and styles of the period culminating with the monstrous cop-show theme sounding "Children At Play". A surprising and original jazz album that's a pleasure from start to finish.
Part I Midnight Sunrise Part II Sketches Of Munch Part III The Legend Of Garbo Part IV Anderson Fantasia Part V Sibelius' Testament Part VI Children At Play

Very good jazz/rock//fusion. Thanks to 'johny' for all 3 from them. A Helmet of Gnats biography Members: Chris Fox- Guitar- Berklee College of music. Played briefly with Eddie Jobson (Zappa,UK,Yes) Mathew Bocchino -Keyboards- Attended Berklee Collegel of music Mark Conose-Drums-Berklee College of Music and Miami Univeristy Wayne Zito-Bass-Berklee College of Music
As you can see the members of this band have a great pedigree in music. They bring their assorted talents to the group known as A Helmet of Gnats. As that name suggests music high in energy but balanced in virtuosity. A blend of Jazz with a dash of classical elements underlined by some very good in your face rock.
In 1980 guitarist Chris Fox and keyboardist Mathew Bocchino decided to form a band while in high school. This band was to play the music of such progressive giants as UK, Frank Zappa and Kansas. They called themselves Left Testicle and only played three concerts (small wonder with that name). By 1982 this band had morphed into more of a fusion cover band called "By-Product" doing covers by Return to Forever, Bruford and The Dixie Dregs. Their live shows left everyone wanting more.
The band changed their name to Helmet of Gnats in late 1982. After several line up changes at bass and drums AHoG played mostly Dixie Dregs covers. More Personnel changes left the band without a bass player. They recorded some demos using a Roland midi sequencer for the bass lines but by 1988 they had disbanded. Chris and Matt reformed in 1990 a more mainstream band with a female vocalist. They called themselves "Doctor Curious" named after the singers gynecologist. After a short time Chris and Matt decided they wanted a return to the instrumental adventurous music they loved. They fired the signer and took back the name Helmet of Gnats. They released a self titled album in 1996 with Nicki Defala on bass and Nicki Vitiello on drums. By 2000 the band had replaced the Nicki's with Wayne Zito on bass and Mark Conese on drums. In 2004 they released their second CD A Helmet Of Gnats II. They tour with this line up to this day. [progarchives]

Hailing from Kobe in Japan, QUASER performs Progressive rock of the highest quality. Originally in the vein of AIN SOPH or KENSO, the band ventures even further in the EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER territory, and knows how to electrify things when needed. Jointly published by the Musea and Poseidon labels, the fourth album "Delta Flux" (2011) opens with guitar riffs worth of the best Progressive heavy-metal bands arounds, duelling with a fierce Hammond organ. Only a second later, the gentle symphonic side takes control, led by delicate piano notes and typical nippon vocals. There are rhythm changes all over the place, creating a refreshing musical maelstrom. Let's note several guest-musicians, including a violin player, and a cover-version of PROKOFIEV's "Enemy God". Not to be missed ! The Japanese band Quaser traces its roots to 1976, but their first album appeared in 1994. Their fifth album Delta Flux was recorded between 2006-2009 though not released until 2011. A violinist guests. Always influenced by ELP and UK, on this album Quaser include an arrangement of Prokofiev’s The Enemy God, as Carl Palmer did on Works Volume One. That’s only part of their sound however, as Quaser cover much more prog ground, including some flowing, mellow songs (something bands such as Ars Nova or Gerard never could). Quaser feature male vocals in Japanese. While some Japanese vocals present a problem to western ears, there’s no issue here as the vocals are mellifluous, comparable to those of Outer Limits. There are some nods to modern tastes, but by and large this is a classy album of 1970s style symphonic prog. YouTube has the song Wild Ocean.

If These Trees Could Talk is a Post-Rock band from Akron, Ohio, US. The main man behind the band is Zack Kelly who set the basic building blocs of the band while studying at a school in Pittsburgh. He wrote a couple of songs, but he didn't had a band to play them so he went in search of musicians and If These Trees Could talk was formed. The band later made improvements on the songs Kelly wrote and they ended up being part of their self-titled debut EP that was released in 2006.
If These Trees Could Talk is band with a slightly heavier sound which is often compared to bands like Joy Wants Eternity, Red Sparowes or even Explosions In The Sky at their heaviest. Highly recommended for fans of the bands mentioned and Post-Rock in general. Not that far from my hometown..I will also post the 2nd one from them as well..

One of the very best musicians in the genre, This is posted in very HD. When former Jefferson Starship guitarist Craig Chaquico (cha-KEY-so) reinvented himself as a pop instrumentalist in 1993 (the year he released Acoustic Highway, his solo debut), he brought the still-fledgling contemporary instrumental genre one of its freshest sounds in years. Chaquico blended skillful pop-rock-blues songcraft with studio savvy to produce a lush, layered acoustic sound so full-bodied that at times he seemed to be leading a guitar choir. His initial hit, the title track from that first disc (and the concluding piece on this best-of package), remains one of the most cheerfully infectious tunes in this category. Other selections on Panorama, a retrospective that samples his first five recordings, also capture the hip, lyrical joyfulness of Chaquico's early work ("Native Tongue," "Sacred Ground," "Return of the Eagle"), where new melodic ideas might pop up at any point in the composition. Elements of smooth jazz began surfacing on his third disc, A Thousand Pictures, and that trend has persisted ever since, draining some of the organic, free-spirited spark from Chaquico's music. The two new tunes found on this disc, "Café Carnival" (a Latin big-band production) and "Beyond Words," suggest that pattern still prevails, and while Chaquico can make smooth jazz sound pretty good (try "Sweet Talk"), that easy-listening glaze is an unnecessary crutch for such an imaginative player. Nevertheless, Panorama is an attractive package; just a touch too sweet in places. --Terry Wood

An oldie but a goodie, thanks to 'ROIO' for helping me fill in this artist. He has alot of great releases that are either sold out, or unavailable. But we'll try and get them. AMG: "Yamashita studied piano as a child and has played professionally since the age of 17. He attended Kunitachi College of Music in Tokyo from 1962-1967 and played for a time with saxophonist Sadao Watanabe. Yamashita formed a bassless trio in 1969; his Bill Evans-influenced style expanded to include free jazz, a rather radical step given the conservatism of the Japanese jazz scene at the time. Beginning in the '70s, his trio toured widely and played many major European events, including the Berlin and Montreux jazz festivals. Yamashita's U.S. debut was at the 1979 Newport Jazz Festival; he also recorded with members of the Art Ensemble of Chicago around that time. In the '80s, Yamashita began playing frequent solo concerts. He also branched out stylistically, playing with Japanese and Korean percussionists and incorporating adaptations of classical works into his repertoire. Yamashita has worked with many internationally famous artists, including Max Roach, Elvin Jones, Bill Laswell, Mal Waldron, and Lester Bowie. In 1985, he made the first of what would come to be annual appearances at Sweet Basil night club in New York. He formed an 'American' trio with bassist Cecil McBee and drummer Pheeroan akLaff; the group became his primary performing unit when in the States. In the '90s, Yamashita recorded several albums for Verve; in 1994, he played solo at the label's 50th anniversary concert at Carnegie Hall. Yamashita has recorded more than 40 albums. He's also an accomplished essayist, having written several books."

Great prog/rock release. Thanks to 'sasha716' for this. [I had not heard of them.
It all started with a violinist.
Miki FUJIMOTO was educated at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music where she majored in classical violin. She continued studying music in Spain and Japan, eventually meeting Junpei OZAKI (guitar), Ryuichi ODANI (keyboards), Naoki KITAO (bass) and Masataka SUWA (drums) at the Pan School of Music in Tokyo. Together with FUJIMOTO's violin, they formed the instrumental rock group FANTASMAGORIA. The band released a self-titled live demo through Vital Records and then spent the next four years touring the world playing various prog rock festivals - including the Baja Prog Festival in Mexico and the Prog Sud Festival in France - and performing on live television.
In 2009, FANTASMAGORIA released their first full length album, 'Day and Night' on the Japanese and French labels Poseidon & Musea respectively. Not allowing a new release to slow their globetrotting, the quintet continue to tour in their native Japan and around the world.
At first glance, FANTASMAGORIA appears to be a spacey alt-metal band with a violin. However the liberal use of keyboards (astral strings, harpsichords, and good old fashioned organs) often gives the band a sound that many symphonic fans will appreciate. Additionally, the 5-piece is very good at twisting their melodies, never allowing any one element to overstay its welcome. Devoted listeners of Larks' Tongues in Aspic-period King Crimson and arty heavy-rock likely shant be disappointed.
