Shaun Baxter--JazzMetal [1993/1994]

Here's some real nice 'jazz/metal/fusion' that was sent by'anon'. I had never heard of him til this. Pretty good [imo].

The debut recording from British guitarist Shaun Baxter is somewhat of an underground guitar classic. The title along with a limited availability contributed to the recording's lore, but in reality this is a pretty typical Fusion/Shred session. There is more Metal than Jazz here and by the latter's traditional definition, not one note is swung. Baxter is a fine and versatile technician and offers up some impressive pyrotechnics throughout the session, but despite his own claims, there is no real innovation here. His style and sound borrow from the legato approach of both Allan Holdsworth and Scott Henderson with a heavier edge, but it would have been more interesting to hear a strict application of his formal Jazz guitar training. This would have been possible too as bassist Terry Gregory has played alongside Jazz guitar great Martin Taylor. Labeling the music as 'Jazz Metal' creates a set of expectations in both Jazz and Metal camps, but the results here won't satisfy either one of them. This is not imply that this is not a worthwhile session, to the contrary, as there is plenty to enjoy for guitar fans, just leave the labels off. [allmusic]

[RE POST]Takahiro Kido--A Short Happy Life [2009]

Here is one of his solo releases [there are 5].Japanese multi-instrumentalist Takahiro Kido might already be known to some for his work with Anoice, whose album Remmings was released via Important Records a couple of years back. Now stepping out on his own for the reliably wonderful Plop label, Kido has made one of the most convincing and rewarding hybrids of modern composition and micro-electronics of the year so far. In addition to his own performances across a variety of instruments (including piano, guitar, glockenspiel, flute and computer) Kido has called upon a number of string players to contribute to a processed orchestral sound that dominates much of the album in its various permutations. Integral to Kido's music is a sense of location. Many of these pieces rely upon the natural reverberations of a particular space for their particular sound. Apparently, these recordings were made in abandoned hotel lobbies, up mountains and in tunnels, lending a certain spatial character to the songs.

[SPECIAL] SPHERE 3--COMEUPPANCE [2002]

Thanks to 'meho' for this. I had never hear this band B4. Very good jazz/fusion from UK. This is the only release [so far].

After listening to the band Network, it made me realize how few progressive fusion bands I had been hearing coming from the UK of late, and knowing that the country once possessed the very best in this genre(Bruford, Brand X, National Health, Isotope, The Fents, UK, Holdsworth, etc.) led me to wonder if the musicians there had all but given up on the sport of fine musicianship. Well here a cd from a band on the progressive label Cyclops records called Sphere 3 - Comeuppance, and it involves the very progressive and fusion mix that makes this style of music so great. To get the fullest impact from this kind of music, the main ingredients are: Great musicians, and Sphere 3 possesses them at every instrument. Great compostions, and here they have acheived that also. Originality, obviously cloning or mimicking a band seldom gets an artist the proper credit they deserve, even if they are outshining their idols, and I am happy to say that Sphere 3 again have excelled on their own take on this style of music. I get the impression that the band mates are well in tune to both the world of progressive rock, as well as the fusion realm, their music can sound like an excerpt from many of progbands epic instrumental section. They also straddle along both sides of the musical fence with these styles, never sounding more like one than the other. As is the case for any band attempting to create a fresh take in this challenging scene, the priority of composition before virtuoso becomes the focal point of importance, here you will find that Sphere 3 has wholeheartedly adopted this approach, by unfurling 10 songs of music that is compelling, challenging, original, and a pleasure to listen to. The band has no boudaries to confine them, they are experienced players that take adventurous expeditions into many uncharted territories. Their ability to gather the many sides of their collective influeces has transfluenced into a sound that is all their own. I can't liken Sphere 3 to any particular band, this is a credit to the players, that they created Comeuppance with such solid songs, and musicianship on their first cd, only leaves me that much more curious to hear a follow up. Formed in the late 90-s and have been playing as supporting act and at festivals with Magnum, Focus, The Flower Kings and I.Q .. JBRADY[PROGGNOISS]

Chick Corea Electric Band--Live From Elario's [1996]

The first live performance of this power-trio is evidence that they clicked right off the bat. It also has some interesting experimental sounds. A young Dave Weckl rips on drums. That said, I'm pleased to own it for its relative rarity & curiosity value if nothing else. Don't get me wrong, of course there is some phenomenal playing - these boys are the business after all, but its much more of an acoustic sound than I like. I figure Chick must have thought that too, and he decided to add Scott Henderson / Frank Gambale to give the band the harder fusion edge, and pull the job off big time. Thanks to 'xyzz' for this nice one as well..
